Welcome

This August support smart growth by voting for me, Greg Miles, in the 2008 Election for Jackson Town Council.

Put my 6 years of experience volunteering for the Jackson Planning and Zoning Commission, and 5 conferences on Smart Growth to work for you.

Why You Want Me

Being on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the past 6 years I have learned what creates good development as well as what detracts from sustaining a strong community. There are areas where our Land Development Regulations (LDRs) need amending to ensure we get quality projects that serve the needs of the local community as well as those of our visitors. I encourage:

  • Smart Growth
  • Town as Heart strategies
  • Affordable Housing
  • Free Market Home Ownership
  • Incentives for the development of seasonal work force housing

The 5 conferences I attended were hosted by the " New Partners for Smart Growth " check out www.newpartners.org/about.html for information on the upcoming 8th annual conference. The conferences have taken me to Portland, Miami, Denver, LA, Washington D.C., always interesting, always something to learn.

Smart Growth

An urban planning and transportation theory that concentrates growth in the center of a city to avoid urban sprawl; and advocates compact, transit-oriented, walkable, bicycle-friendly land use, including neighborhood schools, streets that work for everyone, mixed-use development with a range of housing choices.

Principles
  1. Mix land uses
  2. Take Advantage of compact building design
  3. Create a range of housing opportunities and choices
  4. Create walkable communities
  5. Foster distinctive, attractive communities with a strong sense of place
  6. Preserve open space, farmland, natural beauty, and critical environmental areas
  7. Strengthen and direct development toward existing communities
  8. Provide a variety of transportation choices
  9. Make development decisions predictable, fair, and cost effective
  10. Encourage community and stakeholder collaboration in development decisions
